An exceptional first week for UBBSLA team since the launch of the “WEEE BEHAVE” campaign
Over 300 children from Varna region are already part of this pilot action
The educational campaign “WEEE BEHAVE: Electronic waste? Recycle and save the future!” has been launched successfully in Varna, reaching over 300 children from primary schools in the city in the first week alone. The initiative, organized by the Union of Bulgarian Black Sea Local Authorities (UBBSLA) in partnership with the Public Environment Center for Sustainable Development (PECSD), aims to raise awareness about e-waste and encourage environmentally friendly behavior among the younger generation.
Information&Education talks and practical activities
During the period 17-21 November, the UBBSLA team visited numerous schools in Varna region, where within one lesson, they introduced students from grades 1 to 4 to the essence of e-waste, its impact on the environment and the importance of recycling. Through interactive talks, educational games and practical workshops, the children learned how every part of old electronic devices can be reused. They also understood how important these efforts are for the protection of nature and human health.
Creative competitions and awards
The campaign also includes creative elements, such as a student competition for the most creative project made from recycled materials. Children can participate individually or as teams, presenting projects in different categories: projects made from recycled electronic parts, posters, collages, drawings and presentations. The deadline for participation is December 5, and all participants will receive certificates, and the winners will be awarded special prizes.
International scope and long-term vision
WEEE BEHAVE is an international initiative that is being implemented in parallel in several European countries, including Bulgaria, Cyprus, Greece, Italy and Spain. The main idea is that awareness should start in schools in order to influence families and ultimately the entire community. The campaign aims to prevent water pollution from e-waste through its effective recycling and use as a resource.
Current activities and future plans
The comprehensive campaign in Varna will continue throughout November, with experts from UBBSLA and the PECSD continuing to visit schools and hold information and educational meetings. In parallel, the school competition will stimulate children’s creativity and commitment to environmental protection.
The strong start of WEEE BEHAVE in Varna shows that education and awareness are key factors in tackling the global e-waste problem. This initiative not only teaches children the importance of recycling, but also makes them active participants in creating a cleaner and healthier environment. The initiative is officially supported by the Municipality of Varna and the Regional Department of Education – Varna.
